Every study lands in the same neighborhood: weekday evenings win, weekend mornings are underrated, and 3 AM is a graveyard. But the best time to post on TikTok is not the best time to post on Instagram, and neither is automatically the best time for your account. This page gives you the general answers first — then shows you how to find your own, which is the only answer that actually matters.

The best time to post, by platform
These are the strongest weekday windows in the heatmaps above, curated from large published studies (Sprout Social, Later, Hootsuite 2024–25) — the same sources behind most "best time to post" articles. Treat them as starting points, not appointments. All times are in your audience's local timezone, not yours.

A few patterns are worth noticing. TikTok is the most evening-skewed of the three — its strongest block sits between 7 and 10 PM, when people are done with the day and scrolling from the couch. Instagram has a genuine lunch spike around noon plus an after-work block, which is where the "post at lunchtime" advice comes from. YouTube behaves differently because watching takes commitment: people start videos after school or work, so the window opens mid-afternoon and peaks around 6 PM — and on weekends it slides to late morning, when viewers actually have time for a 15-minute video.
Why the first 60 minutes decides everything
None of these platforms shows your post to all your followers at once. Feeds would be chaos. Instead, every post goes through a distribution test:
- The test slice. Your post is shown to a small sample first — some followers who are online right now, plus a slice of non-followers on TikTok's For You feed or Instagram's Reels tab.
- The measurement window. Over roughly the first hour, the platform watches what that sample does: watch time, completion, likes, comments, shares, saves. On YouTube it's click-through rate and early watch duration.
- The verdict. Strong signals earn the next, bigger slice of distribution. Weak signals mean the post slows down and quietly stops surfacing.
This is the entire reason posting time matters. The test slice is drawn from whoever is awake and scrolling when you publish. Post at 9 AM while your audience is in class or commuting, and your video gets tested on whoever happens to be around — a smaller, less representative crowd. Post at 9 PM, when your people are actually scrolling, and the same video gets a fairer first test with more of your real audience in it. Same content, different first hour, different outcome.
Two consequences follow. First, timing is a multiplier, not a substitute — a weak video at the perfect time still dies, it just dies in front of more people. Second, posting when your audience is awake beats posting at a global optimum. The single "best" hour on a generic heatmap is useless if your followers are asleep during it. That's why the next section keeps pushing you toward your own analytics.
Why general heatmaps are a floor, not a ceiling
Every published heatmap — including the one in this tool — is an average across millions of accounts. Averages hide the only thing you actually care about: when your people are online.
A high-school teacher making classroom content has an audience of teachers. They check their phones before school, around 6–7 AM, and again after the last bell. A gaming creator's audience peaks from about 10 PM to 1 AM, when sessions wind down. Same platform, sometimes the same format — completely different best hours. If the teacher posts at the generic "best" time of 9 PM, she's publishing into her audience's bedtime and handing the first-hour test to night owls who will never follow a teacher account.
Age shifts things too, and the tool builds this in: Gen Z scrolls roughly two hours later than the baseline; Gen X is online about three hours earlier. Millennials and mixed audiences sit near the baseline. Switch the audience above and watch the whole heatmap slide — that slide is the difference between a decent guess and a good one.
Where to find your own data
Every platform hands you the answer for free. Here's the TikTok path, step by step — Instagram and YouTube work almost the same way:
- Open TikTok, go to your profile, and tap TikTok Studio (or Settings → Creator tools → Analytics).
- Open the Followers tab.
- Scroll to Most active times — a day-by-day, hour-by-hour graph of when your followers are on the app.
- Find the two or three tallest blocks and post 30–60 minutes before them, so your video is fresh in the test slice when the wave arrives.
The equivalents: Instagram → Professional dashboard → Total followers → "Most active times". YouTube → YouTube Studio → Analytics → Audience → "When your viewers are on YouTube". YouTube's panel is the most literal of the three — a heatmap of your actual viewers, hour by hour, day by day.
Timezone mistakes everyone makes once
The classic version: you're in New York, you read that 9 PM is the best time to post on TikTok, and you post at 9 PM your time. But 60% of your audience is in California. For them the video went up at 6 PM — and by 9 PM Pacific, when they're actually scrolling, your post is three hours old and its first-hour test is long over. You didn't post at the wrong time. You posted at the right time in the wrong timezone.
The fix is boring but non-negotiable: convert to your audience's timezone before you schedule. Check your top territories first (TikTok Studio → Followers → Top territories; Instagram → Professional dashboard → Total followers; YouTube Studio → Analytics → Audience → Top geographies). If one region dominates, post for its timezone. If your audience is spread across the US, Eastern is a reasonable default — largest population block, tolerable for Central — but if the West Coast wins, post for the West Coast.

A simple 4-week experiment
Reading about posting times gets you to the starting line. Actually finding your best time takes a small test — and it doesn't need to be scientific, just consistent. Here's a lightweight protocol that fits in a notes app:
- Week 1 — the heatmap's top window. Pick the #1 window for your platform and audience above (say, TikTok at 9 PM). Post your usual format there all week. At the 60-minute mark of each post, log views, likes, comments, and shares.
- Week 2 — the runner-up. Switch to the second window (7 PM, or the lunch bump on Instagram). Same format, same logging.
- Week 3 — your analytics' pick. Post at the tallest block in your own "most active times" data. This is the window the studies can't see.
- Week 4 — a wildcard. Try something off-pattern — a weekend morning, an early weekday slot. Wildcards are how you find windows your competitors haven't noticed.
Then average each week's first-hour numbers and pick the winner. Two rules keep the test honest: hold the format constant — changing content style and posting time in the same week tells you nothing — and compare first-hour numbers, not totals. Totals are skewed by how long each post has been live; the first hour is exactly what the distribution test measures.
Re-run the experiment about once a quarter. Audiences drift with school schedules, daylight saving time, and your own growth — a window that wins in January can be mediocre by June. This method isn't a guarantee and isn't meant to be. It's a cheap, repeatable way to keep one of the few variables you fully control pointed in the right direction.
